Vegas Sculptor on stage with the “Crazy Girls”
In 1996 the publicist for the Crazy Girls show, Mr. Wayne Bernath, got the wild idea to create a sculpture of the backsides of the Crazy Girls. The sculpture was to be a recreation of the billboards of the girls that were located in various spots around town. I was living in Santa Fe, New Mexico, well known for its resident artists. A friend saw an article about the idea of a sculpture, and passed the article on to me. My friend thought of me first since I had done a series of sculptures featuring butts. I called this series “Butt.. We’re just friends!”. I contacted Wayne, who presented the idea to the Riviera Hotel where the Crazy Girls show had been playing for nearly 10 years at that time. The decision was made to have the sculpture made and unveil it to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the show. I spent 10 days in Las Vegas making all the molds directly from the girls backsides. (Not a bad job if you can get it!) Another 4 months was spent cleaning up the molds and working with the crew at Shidoni Foundry in Santa Fe. Finally on May 13, 1997 the sculpture was unveiled. The press was there as were protesters from NOW (National Organization of Women). To see more pictures of the making of the sculpture and some of the press coverage you can go here.
